submission FAQs.

  • Can I submit work that has been published elsewhere?
We love the feeling of putting out fresh and original content therefore, no, sorry. Please only send work that has not previously been published elsewhere. We consider personal blogs an exception to this, although ask that Sum is acknowledged as publisher if your submission is successful.
  • Can I submit work that is being considered by other publications/competitions etc.?
Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • How many pieces of work can I submit?
We will accept one submission per issue. For some categories (i.e. Flash) this may involve submission of up to 3 pieces. Please refer to the genre-specific limits on each category on the main submission page for details.
  • When can I expect a response?
You can generally expect to receive a response from us within a few weeks (maximum of 4) after the submission deadline whether or not you have been successful with your submission.
  • Do you offer payments for contributors?
As much as we wish we could, Sum is an independent, small-scale and voluntary run project. As such, we regrettably are unable to offer payment to contributors at this time.
  • I don't have a Google account and can't use your submission form, can I still submit?"
Yes, absolutely! If you're having difficulty using our form, please email your submission along with relevant details (i.e. full name, short bio, category) to submissions@sumjournal.com.
