Playing Hooky
Karen Wood
Poetry/Arts

fractured red balls
moving rounds
sneaking out back
out front, playing hooky
as they bounce
-
escaping their
surveillance post
breaking away, for a day
-
there they go, engrossed
in their new game
‘pavement play’
About the Artist
Wood is an ‘artist’ and ‘urban explorer’ who conjures art out of mundane road markings and industrial surrounds that we abide by—without ever properly seeing—every day. Wood’s artworks explore these complex landscapes especially, the ways in which we’re allowed to move through them. From gentrification to Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS), the city is increasingly subject to new political and aesthetic visions. Wood successfully intervenes in these contemporary debates.
